Title: Cats of Istanbul

This piece was created to convey the social and cultural significance of cats in Istanbul, Turkey. During my travels, I observed the unique relationship between cats and human communities in different countries and sought to express these observations through my artwork. The red patterns at the edges of the canvas symbolize an Islamic prayer mat, and within these patterns, I depicted the mosques I visited. In front of the mosques, small figures of people illustrate the gathering spaces, cultural practices, and daily life of the community.

On the mat, a large cat sits prominently. In Turkish culture, cats have long been regarded as clean and sacred animals, historically allowed into mosques, one of the few animals permitted in these sacred spaces. Even today, remnants of Ottoman-era designs, such as sunken street wells, allow cats to drink water when it rains, reflecting the care and respect afforded to them. By placing the cat on the mat, the artwork symbolizes its cherished and respected role within the culture.

Through this piece, viewers are invited to see more than just a cat; they are invited to experience the animal’s position within cultural traditions, its coexistence with humans, and the historical and social significance it carries. The cat quietly observes, embodying its role as a beloved and respected member of the community.

이 작품은 터키, 이스탄불에서 느낀 고양이들의 사회적·문화적 위치를 표현하고자 제작되었습니다. 저는 세계 여러 나라를 여행하며 각 지역의 문화와 고양이와의 관계를 관찰하고 연구하였으며, 이를 그림으로 나타내고자 했습니다. 작품에서 붉은 무늬로 채워진 모서리는 이슬람 기도 매트를 형상화하였고, 매트 안의 패턴에는 제가 방문했던 무슬림 모스크들을 그렸습니다. 모스크 앞에는 작은 사람들이 모여 있는 모습이 담겨 있어, 그곳의 사람들의 문화, 일상, 그리고 사회적 의미 있는 장소를 보여줍니다.

그러나 매트 위에는 큰 고양이가 앉아 있는 모습을 그려 넣었습니다. 이는 터키 문화에서 고양이가 오랫동안 깨끗한 존재로 여겨졌고, 모스크에 들어갈 수 있는 몇 안 되는 동물이 있음을 상징합니다. 현재도 터키의 길바닥에는 오토만 제국 시대부터 고양이를 위해 설계된 우물이 있으며, 비 오는 날 고양이들이 물을 마실 수 있도록 일부러 움푹 파여 있는 디자인이 남아 있습니다. 이러한 역사적·문화적 배경을 반영하여, 작품 속 고양이는 사랑받고 존중받는 존재로서의 위치를 상징적으로 보여줍니다.

이 그림을 통해 관찰자는 단순한 고양이의 모습이 아니라, 문화적 의미 속에서의 고양이의 존재, 사람과 동물의 공존, 그리고 역사와 전통 속에서 고양이가 가지는 특별한 위치를 경험하게 됩니다. 고양이는 조용히 그 공간을 지키며, 사람들과 함께 살아가는 사회적 동물로서의 의미를 전달합니다.
